McWilliams to be honored as Credit Union Magazine 2018 Credit Union Hero of the Year

Tom McWilliams PhotoMADISON, Wis., and WASHINGTON (4/25/18) – Credit Union Magazine announced that Tom McWilliams, senior vice president of the Mississippi Credit Union Association, will be honored as the 2018 Credit Union Hero of the Year.

“Across the decades of my career, I have been blessed to know and build an amazing credit union family. I love what I do, and my motivation has always been simple: A desire to offer the best professional growth opportunities to help others become heroes for their own members,” said McWilliams. “I am honored, and truly humbled, to receive this recognition and to know I have made a difference.”

“Tom McWilliams is the consummate lifelong learner,” said Ann Hayes Peterson, CUNA’s vice president of publishing and editor-in-chief. “His contributions have influenced the development of credit union managers and leaders throughout his state and the movement—and always with the goal of changing members’ lives for the better.”

More about Tom McWilliams
Tom McWilliams is Senior Vice President for the Mississippi Credit Union Association (MSCUA) and will celebrate 32 years of service with MSCUA in 2018.  He is a Certified Meeting Planner (CMP), a Credit Union Development Expert (CUDE) and a Certified Credit Union Executive (CCUE).  Tom is responsible for planning MSCUA’s annual meeting, convention and trade show, as well as all conferences and educational events.  He has also previously served as Director of Marketing and Manager of League Vendor Relations for the Association. 

Tom currently services as chairman and education director for the Southeast CUNA Management School, which prepares the next generation of industry leaders.

Tom is an active member of Meeting Planners International (MPI) and has served both as a chapter officer and chapter director.  Tom has received the “Rising Star of the Year” award as well as the “Meeting Planner of the Year” award from his local MPI chapter.  He was also selected “Meeting Planner of the Year” by the National Speaker’s Association and has twice been recognized by the Jackson Visitors and Convention Bureau as a “Hometown Hero” for his efforts in promoting Jackson, Mississippi. 

Tom is a proud graduate of Mississippi State University and is a past board member for the Central Mississippi MSU Alumni Association.  Tom also currently serves as president of his neighborhood's Homeowners Association.

I have spoken several times for Tom at his annual meetings through the years, and he has always been a low-maintenance, pleasurable host with whom to work. It is obvious the credit unions throughout Mississippi love him and lift him up as a hero - and so do his program personnel.
